Feeling cynical, down, depressed about the state of humanity?
Go see Children of Men. Not to raise your expectations too high, but this is the best movie I've seen in years. It may be the best movie I've ever seen.
You'll be raked through the ashes, and bombarded with terrible violence, but you'll come up breathing new air.
Or something like that.

I read the book about 10 years ago, maybe longer. I've always remembered it. It's too bad Octavia Butler, the author, died before the movie came out.
I hear the movie is only loosely based on the book. So maybe you'll be disappointed.
The movie's never as good as the book, of course. The trailers have some of the scenes I remember from the book, but they may be showing the only ones that are. Maybe I can see it in Denver at the Continental theater with the seven-story IMAX screen. Movies always seem especially good at that theater.
I have a friend who's seen the movie and read the book. Says he enjoyed both. He wrote about it in this comment thread (all of these comments are pretty awesome): http://snarkmarket.com/blog/snarkives/movies/children_of_men/#comments
